Most post-merger integrations do not end. They just slowly stop being managed. Work drifts into the line organization without a formal handoff, open items get orphaned, and nobody ever officially declares the integration done. Integration managers should close out every workstream deliberately — knowing:
- When the IMO's job is finished,
- How to hand off remaining work to the right BAU owner, and
- How to do it with enough rigor that nothing falls through the gap between "integration complete" and "business as usual."
What does a clean finish for an integration look like?
- The majority of activities complete with remaining items in the BAU action plan
- No dependency blockers
- Risks mitigated with named owners
- Lessons captured
Every checked box on a closure checklist is a problem that won't surface six months later as an unresolved integration issue nobody owns. Every handoff completed with a formal handshaking protocol is a workstream that doesn't later become someone else's problem. And every set of lessons captured is institutional knowledge that makes the next deal faster and cheaper than the last one.
