The Employee M&A Communications Guide gives leaders the talking points and FAQ answers they need to show up prepared, consistent, and credible when their teams are looking to them for clarity.
Every employee wants to know what's happening, why is it happening, how will this affect me, and what do you need from me. Here's an example of how one successful acquirer answered those questions:
- The combination creates scale, distribution reach, and product breadth that neither company could build independently.
- Job reductions are coming in areas of genuine duplication. Most jobs won't be immediately affected. A clear process and timeline for organizational decisions goes out within 30 days.
- Benefits, compensation, and employment programs hold for at least six months.
- Stay focused on customer commitments, stay engaged through the uncertainty, and trust that decisions will be communicated with honesty as they're made.
In total, the FAQ section provides examples of answers to 41 questions across five categories — general, integration approach, operational impact, compensation and benefits, and how to handle external conversations.
It doesn't soften responses to the hard questions.
- Will I lose my job? Most won't be immediately affected, but some reductions will happen within 90 days and others will follow as systems integrate.
- Will offices close? No changes right now, but optimization decisions will come and affected employees will hear about them first.
- Do I have to re-interview for my job? No blanket process — but where overlaps exist, a fair and transparent selection process will resolve them.
- Will I have to relocate? Nothing changes today.
- Will severance be paid? Yes, through the applicable plans, fairly and with respect.
The welcome letter from leadership closes it out with the principles that govern every decision in the integration: performance — doing what's been promised, and integrity — treating every person affected with honesty and respect.
