A post-merger integration succeeds only when someone is accountable for coordinating the thousands of activities required to bring two companies together. This deck defines that role—its responsibilities, deliverables, reporting relationships, and leadership skills—and explains why appointing an Integration Manager is one of the most important decisions an acquirer can make.

The Integration Manager is a dedicated, full-time leader from the acquiring organization. Appointed no later than the transaction announcement, this individual serves as the central point of coordination across every workstream, ensuring that priorities stay aligned, issues are resolved quickly, and the integration remains focused on delivering the objectives of the deal. Without clear leadership, integrations lose momentum.

The Integration Manager oversees development of five core deliverables that establish the foundation for a successful integration:

  1. A comprehensive Day 1 plan ensures the organization is ready when the transaction closes.
  2. Functional integration plans give every workstream a clear roadmap.
  3. A talent retention strategy protects critical employees during the transition.
  4. A communication plan keeps employees, customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders informed.
  5. A disciplined tracking and reporting process gives leadership continuous visibility into progress, risks, and milestones.

Creating high-quality deliverables requires the Integration Manager to bring workstream leaders together, establish operating rhythms, manage cross-functional dependencies, identify risks before they become issues, and ensure decisions are made at the right level and the right time.

The skills required for an Integration Manager match the complexity of the role: strategic thinking, project management discipline, business acumen, conflict resolution, communication clarity at every level, empathy for people navigating real change, and a relentless drive toward results even when the path isn't clear. This is one of the most demanding leadership roles in business. Staff it accordingly.
